James Luke Miller, 26, of Carrizozo, was arraigned in Magistrate Court

on Tuesday afternoon on charges of first-degree murder and tampering

with evidence, following a shooting incident that resulted in the

death of an Oscuro man Monday evening.

Judge Martha Proctor set Miller’s bond at $500,000 cash only. A

preliminary hearing is expected to be scheduled within the next couple

of days. Miller is currently being held at the Lincoln County

Detention Center.

Lincoln County Sherriff’s deputies received a 911 call of a man shot

at 5 p.m. Monday. Deputies arrived at 10795 Hwy. 54 in Oscuro about

twenty minutes later to find the victim dead of an apparent gun shot

wound, according to Undersheriff Robert Shepperd.

Miller confessed to witnesses that he had shot the victim, said Shepperd.

New Mexico State Police assisted in serving warrants at the crime

scene and at Miller’s listed residence at 1106 Fifth St. in Carrizozo.

An investigation is still ongoing, and the name and age of the victim

will be released pending notification of next of kin, said Shepperd.
